Why isn’t my contracting business showing up on Google?

If you’re not showing up, it’s almost always one of five things: your Google Business Profile isn’t verified or finished, it’s set to the wrong category, your business info doesn’t match across the web, you never set a service area, or the website behind it is slow and thin. Here’s the order to fix them in.

1. Your Google Business Profile isn’t verified — or isn’t finished

This is the number-one reason, full stop. An unverified or half-filled profile barely ranks. Claim it, verify it, and fill in every field — hours, services, service area, and a stack of real job photos. A complete profile is the single biggest lever you have, and it’s free.

2. You picked the wrong primary category

Google leans hard on your primary category to decide what searches you show up for. “General Contractor” when you mostly do HVAC, or a vague catch-all, quietly buries you. Set the primary category to the work you actually want to be called for, then add the rest as secondary.

3. Your business info doesn’t match across the web

If your name, address, and phone number read differently on your site, your profile, and old directory listings, Google trusts you less. Pick one exact version and make it match everywhere. Consistency is a ranking signal most contractors never clean up.

4. You never set a service area

If you drive to your customers instead of them coming to you, you’re a service-area business. Set the towns you actually serve. Skip this and Google only shows you right around your address — not across the county you cover.

5. The website behind the profile is slow or thin

Your profile ranks partly on the strength of the site it points to. A slow site, or one with nothing on it, drags the whole thing down. A fast, handbuilt site with a page for each service and each town you serve is what turns a profile into steady calls.

Straight answers

Why isn’t my contracting business showing up on Google?

Most often it’s an unverified or incomplete Google Business Profile, the wrong primary category, business info that doesn’t match across the web, no service area set, or a slow, thin website. Fix the profile first, then the site behind it.

How do I get my contractor business on Google Maps?

Create and verify a Google Business Profile, set your correct primary category and service area, complete every field, and add real job photos. Verification plus a complete profile is what puts you on the map.

How long until I show up after fixing my profile?

Google Business Profile changes can show within days to a few weeks. Broader local ranking improvements from the website and reviews usually take three to six months of consistent work.
